OUTPUT

  • An output shaft is a rotating component that transmits power and torque from an internal mechanism, like a transmission or gearbox, to an external component. Essentially, it is the final point of power delivery from a mechanical system to the machinery that performs the work.

Function

  1. Power transmission: The primary function is to carry rotational power and torque away from the transmission or motor.
  2. Speed and torque variation: In a gearbox, the output shaft's rotational speed and torque are varied relative to the input shaft via different gear ratios. In lower gears, the output shaft turns slower but with greater torque, while in higher gears, it turns faster with less torque.
  3. Final delivery: It acts as the final connection to the drive system. For instance, in a rear-wheel-drive car, the output shaft delivers power from the transmission to the driveshaft, which then goes to the differential and wheels.

Types

Output shafts are often categorized by the way they connect to other components:

  • Keyed: Features a slot or keyway that fits a corresponding key in a gear or pulley. This provides a secure, non-slip connection for reliable power transfer.
  • Splined: Contains tooth-like ridges that interlock with splines on a mating part. This design is common for high-torque applications, as it provides a strong and positive connection.
  • Hollow: Built with a central hole, which can be used to route cables or reduce weight. This type is also known as a through-bore shaft.
  • Flatted: Features a flat surface machined onto a round shaft, which allows components to be securely fastened with a set screw.

Applications

Output shafts are critical components in a wide range of machines and industries, including:

  • Automotive: In a vehicle's transmission, the output shaft delivers power to the driveshaft or directly to the wheels. They are also used in electric and commercial vehicles.
  • Industrial machinery: Found in gearboxes for conveyor systems, industrial mixers, and other manufacturing and processing equipment.
  • Power tools: The shaft that holds the drill bit on a power drill is an output shaft.
  • Robotics and automation: Control the rotational movement of joints in robotic arms.
  • Aerospace: Used in the drive trains of aircraft and spacecraft to transmit power from engines.
  • Home appliances: Powering devices such as washing machines and fans.
